Conceptual Options IVF & Surrogacy News: When Do I Ovulate?
Thanks to our guest blogger, Marcy Coning, who submitted this post to us for release. This post is important, not just for women trying to get pregnant, but it is also important for any woman to know and understand her cycles.
Determining when you ovulate is a vital factor if you need to know when you are more likely to get pregnant. This is very important and helpful for women who are trying to conceive, and can also be somewhat helpful for women who are trying not to get pregnant. Regardless of their choice, women asking themselves; “When do I ovulate?”, will surely benefit from their introspection.
Knowing when you ovulate has other advantages too. Some you may not have even considered before. Most women only think about ovulation as it pertains to pregnancy. Consider some other (lesser known) reasons that women should be aware of their ovulation cycles and feel free to take a peek at these interesting articles on our site…
Why Know When I Ovulate?
When a woman understands her cycle and her body, she is able to take better care of herself and understand the needs of her body. This way, she is more in control of what her nutritional needs are, as well as emotional needs. Some types of natural birth control methods use ovulation predictions as a way to avoid pregnancy for those who do not want to use synthetic hormones or barrier methods.
Knowing your ovulation schedule is most commonly related to getting pregnant, or not getting pregnant. But if you read those articles linked to above, you’ll learn how a woman’s beauty, radiance and even self-confidence are actually related to when she ovulates.
The planning your wedding… article talks about how a woman is most beautiful during ovulation and how she may want to plan her wedding accordingly. And this could go both ways. Maybe she wants to look and feel her best on her wedding day. But at the same time, her and her new husband may not want to get pregnant at the very beginning of their marriage. Either way, knowing when she ovulates can play a very important role in when to schedule this very important day.
In the get asked out on more dates… article – it mentions the association between attraction and confidence. When you are ovulating you are more attractive. When you feel more attractive you have more confidence. The article talks about how to use that confidence to attract more dates. But if you don’t want or need more dates, consider using your newly discovered confidence for one of several reasons…
- make a good impression in a job interview
- negotiate a better deal for a major purchase (like a new car)
- convince your spouse or significant other to see things your way
- or any other reason you may need a boost in confidence

Conceptual Options Egg Donation News: Considering Egg Donation?
With the increase of the use of egg donors for helping couples/women/men create their families, we thought it would be helpful for women considering egg donation to read the following information from the Colorado Center for Egg Donation.
Highlighting Possible Risks and Considerations of Egg Donation
If you are considering becoming an egg donor for an infertile couple, you should be aware of certain risks that it might bring to your health and well-being. It is of course a rewarding experience; however, the egg donation process takes several months and includes time consuming appointments with the doctors, the staff, therapists and counselors. The medical procedure that follows could turn out to be uncomfortable physically and brings about emotional turmoil to the donors. The process is tiresome. Some good egg donation centers are upfront and are willing to answer to the queries raises by the applicants.
- If you are thinking of becoming an egg donor, understand that there is a specific criterion such as specified age range, good health, non smoker and suitable weight that must be met. The screening process involves several steps in order to verify if the possible donor fits the required portfolio and are healthy enough to undergo through the procedure.
- However, there are other aspects of the process that must be considered. Physical exam that includes submission of blood test and cervical cultures. This initial medical examination is mandatory to screen for any inheritable diseases or disorders. The ability to pass a physical exam determines if the applicant will be able to develop and carry the eggs without problems.
- The candidate must also pass a psychological test usually administered on a computer. The examination also includes evaluation by a psychologist to provide the patient with detailed information of mental stress that could be involved with the entire process. This also helps the doctors to understand if the possible donor will have the mental capacity to take on the commitment.
- The donor must maintain a flexible routine so that weekly appointments could be scheduled. During these visits, blood test is carried to check the health of the donor and their reaction to the prescribed medications.
- The procedure also requires self inject medication to stimulate growth and health of the eggs.
Prior to beginning an egg donor cycle, we suggest egg donors to discuss the potential risks and side effects involved with a fertility physician.

Conceptual Options Surrogacy News Update: Domenico Dolce Finally Apologizes for Comments on Surrogacy & IVF
As we discussed here almost six months ago about Dolce & Gabbana’s comments against IVF and Surrogacy, Domenico Dolce caused a stir, with celebrities such as Ricki Martin, Elton John and others calling for a boycott of the company.
According to Cosmopolitan,
Six months ago, Domenico Dolce (or the Dolce half of design duo Dolce & Gabbana) surprised and offended many with his views on family: “We oppose gay adoptions,” he said in an interview with the Italian magazine Panorama. “The only family is the traditional one. No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed.”
Dolce went on to say, “You are born to a mother and a father — or at least that’s how it should be. I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteri [for] rent, semen chosen from a catalog.”
Elton John even started a hashtag of #boycottDolceGabbana.
But the article continued,
Now, after a period of “soul-searching,” Dolce is opening up about his feelings to Vogue. “I am so sorry,” he said. “It was not my intention to offend anyone.”
Dolce claims he has since changed his mind about this subject. “I’ve talked to Stefano [Gabbana] a lot about this,” Dolce said. “I’ve realized that my words were inappropriate, and I apologize. They are just kids. You don’t need labels, baby labels.”
Hmmm….baby labels? Well, we certainly hope that he continues on his journey to understanding.

Conceptual Options Surrogacy News: Kim Kardashian Denies Surrogacy Rumors
No matter what anyone thinks of Kim Kardashian and her pregnancy, it is fairly obvious that having a surrogate would provide her with additional time in front of the camera. So, the fact that she is now denying all rumors of having a surrogate is actually a sad commentary on the way that the world (the haters specifically) looks at other people, especially celebrities. Hear what she has to say…
According to E Online,
The pregnant Keeping Up With the Kardashians star took to Instagram to post a completely naked picture of herself in order to show followers what she looks like at this stage of her pregnancy. In her caption she slams those who dare criticize her growing baby bump, telling the haters, “Everyone’s body is different, every pregnancy is very different!”
She and husband Kanye Westwere very vocal about their fertility struggles the second time around, so she says she is “blessed” to be expecting her baby boy. The E! star went through it all when she was pregnant with North West, so this time around she isn’t taking any nonsense from anybody.
“First they say I’m too skinny so I have to be faking it…Now they say I’m too big so I have to be faking it…SMH! Some days I’m photographed before I eat & look smaller, some days I’ve just eaten & I look bigger. It’s all a part of the process,” she captioned the racy pic. “I think you all know me well enough to know I would document the process if I got a surrogate. Everyone’s body is different, every pregnancy is very different! I’ve learned to love my body at every stage! I’m going to get even bigger & that’s beautiful too! I’m blessed to even be pregnant & even luckier to not have preeclampsia as far as I know, so I don’t have the swelling issue this time!

Conceptual Options Surrogacy News: Woman Gives Birth to Her Identical Twin’s Baby
Gotta love these stories! We wanted to share this heart-warming story with all of those women thinking about becoming a surrogate for another woman – sister or not!
According to Fox News,
After finding out her identical twin sister was unable to have a baby, a Long Island, New York, woman offered to carry her sister’s baby. On Wednesday, August 5, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, who will be referred to as her nephew, Patch.com reported.
In 2009, Allison Ardolino Dinkelacker was 30 weeks pregnant with her first child when she learned she had stage 3 breast cancer. She needed to start chemotherapy immediately, and her son Dylan was born by emergency caesarean section at 31 weeks.
Cancer-free but unable to conceive again because her cancer was brought on by hormones, Allison wanted another child to grow her family. Her twin sister, Dawn Ardolino Policastro, came with her to a doctor’s appointment, where they were told that were Allison to survive a pregnancy, she’d be unable to carry another child.

Conceptual Options Egg Donor News: The Egg Donor Class Action Against ASRM, etc. Heats Up
Many in this industry have been following this case, Kamakahi v. American Society for Reproductive Medicine, for some time regarding whether or not the actions of the ASRM and its affiliate doctors were considered price fixing pursuant to the Sherman Antitrust Act or not. It looks as if it may go to trial next year.
According to the News & Observer,
If nothing is beyond reach of the law, then we shouldn’t be surprised that the Sherman Antitrust Act is being invoked in a potentially game-changing California case centered on the price of … human eggs.
Two women who object to the generally accepted $10,000 cap for an egg donation say the market should set the cap, not two professional fertility organizations that dominate donors’ compensation.
If the women win, they will turn the fertility trade upside down. That has big implications for fertility clinics such as the one at Duke Medical Center and some 15 other providers in the Triangle area….
Legally, there is no cap on what a woman can charge for her eggs. In this respect, the United States is unusual among the world’s nations because it has allowed a market for eggs to thrive.
However, the donor compensation amounts recommended by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the alpha male of the egg business, are $5,000 and cap at $10,000. The larger amount must be “justified” by ASRM guidelines…
It sounds off-key to haggle over the price of DNA, which is the core of the issue in the California case, but think about this brave new world.
Should the price of an egg be capped at $10,000 by organizations that write the guidelines? Or should the price be determined by what the market will pay?
The Sherman Antitrust Act suggests the latter, and I agree.
What are your thoughts on this case?

Conceptual Options Surrogacy & Pregnancy News: Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg & Wife Expecting
On Friday afternoon, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced—via a Facebook post and photo starring their dog—that he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are expecting their first child: a girl who gave her soon-to-be father a thumbs-up “like” in an ultrasound.
Along with that exciting news, Zuckerberg also disclosed that the couple had been trying for years to get pregnant and had suffered three miscarriages.
Chan is at a point in this pregnancy where the risk of miscarriage is very low, but Zuckerberg shared their past experiences in order to open up the dialogue the emotional toll of a lost pregnancy.
At Conceptual Options we know that every pregnancy is a gift, as is evidenced by the struggles that many couples, like Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan face every day. Congrats to the Facebook team and Mark and Priscilla!
“You feel so hopeful when you learn you’re going to have a child. You start imagining who they’ll become and dreaming of hopes for their future. You start making plans, and then they’re gone. It’s a lonely experience. Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you—as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own.
