The continuing decline in fertility rates in China, which are the highest in the world, are fueling an illegal surrogacy industry in China, according to Shanghai’s China Business News. In fact, the infertility rate in the country has reached an all-time high in 2015. Statistics have shown that the 1-3 percent rate of infertility in the 1970s has skyrocketed to 10 percent today, even reaching 18 percent in some areas.
According to Yibada, the causes for this decline in fertility include the widespread use of toxic pesticides in crops; severe air, water and soil pollution; the recent trend of marrying much later in life; and, the high abortion rate in the country. The result? Couples finding surrogates in China to carry a baby for them.
