Why is a Twin Pregnancy so Different from a Singleton Pregnancy?

As we discussed on our Conceptual Options Blog last week, whether you are a Surrogate or carrying your own babies, a twin pregnancy changes everything you may have ever known about being pregnant. In fact, we have found a great article on the Scary Mommy blog that lists the top 10 reasons why a twin pregnancy is so different from a singleton pregnancy.

Here are the top 10 reasons:
1. Welcome to a high risk pregnancy.
2. Hello puke bucket!
3. Ultrasounds! Ultrasounds galore!
4. Maternity clothes are not made for multiples.
5. You will learn a new language.
6. Exhaustion.
7. Physics will play a larger role in your life than you ever thought possible.
8. Inappropriate questions, comments, and reactions from complete strangers.
9. Invest in an under belly support band.
10. So…incredibly…uncomfortable.

There are definitely more than 10 reasons, but these are some of the best! Can you think of any advice for anyone pregnant with multiples?

Kim Kardashian is Exploring the Possibility of Surrogacy

Kim Kardashian is Exploring the Possibility of Surrogacy

As we discussed on our Conceptual Options blog last week, many celebrities, like Kim Kardashian, have explored the possibility of having a child through Surrogacy.  It is absolutely important that they educate themselves on the entire process. Because, whether you are a celebrity or not, using Surrogacy to have a child is an in depth process that you should understand completely before diving in.

For example, you need to explore the pros and cons of using a Surrogacy agency rather than doing an independent Surrogacy; and to do that, you need to be educated. There are many places that you can turn to for this education. Whether it be an agency, the internet, or organizations like Resolve or ASRM.

If you use an agency, their staff should welcome every question that you may have and be able to explain the entire process to you.

Please do not hesitate to contact the staff at Conceptual Options if you have any questions regarding Surrogacy, Egg Donation, or Sperm Donation.

Conceptual Options Surrogacy News: Lucy Lui Shocks by Announcing Birth of Son via Surrogacy

Congrats to Actor, Lucy Lui, on the birth of her son, Rockwell Lloyd Liu, via surrogate.

According to the NY Daily News,

The “Elementary” star, 46, welcomed home her first son, Rockwell Lloyd Liu.

“Lucy Liu is the proud mother of Rockwell Lloyd Liu, brought into the world via gestational carrier,” her rep told the Daily News. “Mom and baby are healthy and happy.”

Liu shared a pic of herself cradling the adorable newborn on Instagram, captioning the snap, “Introducing the new little man in my life, my son Rockwell Lloyd Liu. In (love)!”

The Queens-born Liu, who attended the prestigious Stuyvesant High School, has always been smart about keeping her personal life private. Still, she managed to keep the pregnancy of her surrogate secret until Thursday’s Instagram announcement and has yet to reveal the identity of the baby’s father.

Conceptual Options Surrogacy News Update: Domenico Dolce Finally Apologizes for Comments on Surrogacy & IVF

As we discussed here almost six months ago about Dolce & Gabbana’s comments against IVF and Surrogacy, Domenico Dolce caused a stir, with celebrities such as Ricki Martin, Elton John and others calling for a boycott of the company.

According to Cosmopolitan,

Six months ago, Domenico Dolce (or the Dolce half of design duo Dolce & Gabbana) surprised and offended many with his views on family: “We oppose gay adoptions,” he said in an interview with the Italian magazine Panorama. “The only family is the traditional one. No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed.”

Dolce went on to say, “You are born to a mother and a father — or at least that’s how it should be. I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteri [for] rent, semen chosen from a catalog.”

….

Elton John even started a hashtag of #boycottDolceGabbana.

But the article continued,

Now, after a period of “soul-searching,” Dolce is opening up about his feelings to Vogue“I am so sorry,” he said. “It was not my intention to offend anyone.”

Dolce claims he has since changed his mind about this subject. “I’ve talked to Stefano [Gabbana] a lot about this,” Dolce said. “I’ve realized that my words were inappropriate, and I apologize. They are just kids. You don’t need labels, baby labels.”

Hmmm….baby labels?  Well, we certainly hope that he continues on his journey to understanding.

Conceptual Options Surrogacy News: Woman Gives Birth to Her Identical Twin’s Baby

Gotta love these stories!  We wanted to share this heart-warming story with all of those women thinking about becoming a surrogate for another woman – sister or not!

According to Fox News,

After finding out her identical twin sister was unable to have a baby, a Long Island, New York, woman offered to carry her sister’s baby. On Wednesday, August 5, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, who will be referred to as her nephew, Patch.com reported.

In 2009, Allison Ardolino Dinkelacker was 30 weeks pregnant with her first child when she learned she had stage 3 breast cancer. She needed to start chemotherapy immediately, and her son Dylan was born by emergency caesarean section at 31 weeks.

Cancer-free but unable to conceive again because her cancer was brought on by hormones, Allison wanted another child to grow her family. Her twin sister, Dawn Ardolino Policastro, came with her to a doctor’s appointment, where they were told that were Allison to survive a pregnancy, she’d be unable to carry another child.

Conceptual Options Surrogacy News: Viva La France! Surrogate Children are Granted Legal Recognition Finally!

Conceptual Options Surrogacy News: Viva La France!  Surrogate Children are Granted Legal Recognition Finally!

According to news reports out of France from last week, it appears that France has finally changed their tune regarding surrogacy births overseas.  There have been many of our own clients over the years who have had to live in fear regarding the legal recognition of their children, but not any longer.

Time Magazine stated the following:

France’s highest court has granted legal recognition to surrogate children, in a major turnaround that will make their daily lives easier and could lead to greater acceptance of new forms of families.

The Cour de cassation ruled Friday that, while surrogacy will remain banned in France, children born abroad through this practice will now be legally tied to their parents and will be granted birth certificates and immediate means to prove their French citizenship…

Until now, surrogate children were deprived of any legal connection to their parents, or any civil status in France. They were considered as children born from unknown legal parents, since their foreign birth certificates weren’t recognized. One lawyer has described them as “ghosts of the republic.”

Unlike other children born abroad to a French parent, these children couldn’t get automatic ID cards or passports, or register for state health care or other services.

This exposed them to frequent problems, because many basic tasks are impossible in France without an ID or authorization from a legal parent.

Congrats to all of the parents in France who have been dealing with this issue for so long – Viva La France!!

Conceptual Options Surrogacy News: Being a Stay At Home Mom and Loving It as a Surrogate

We meet a lot of women who consider becoming a surrogate on a daily basis, but consideration goes only so far.  You need to be a dedicated individual who knows what she wants and how she wants to get there.  As with most of our Conceptual Options surrogates, many women are supplementing own income or they are using the money to allow themselves the ability to stay at home with their children.    But, being a surrogate is not for everyone, nor should it be.
In fact, one of current surrogates just let us know that she is glad she decided to become a surrogate – and she is loving the ability it gives her to be at home with her kids.

Jenny, Jessica, Tina and Staff – thanks so much for the opportunity to join your group of wonderful surrogates at Conceptual Options.  All of you there have given me the ability to stay at home and raise my kids.  I know that it is not for everyone, but it works for me and my husband.  Thank you again !  I am enjoying this entire experience beyond belief (although not so much in the morning with this morning sickness 🙂

Conceptual Options Surrogacy & IVF News: “Test Tube” Baby No Longer a Rarity

Conceptual Options Surrogacy & IVF News: “Test-Tube” Baby No Longer a Rarity

There are reports that now claim that “Test tube babies” are not that rare these days.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1.5% of babies born in the US are conceived using what’s called Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), of which the most common procedure is in vitro fertilization (IVF).

According to Business Insider UK,

Though thousands of IVF cycles are done every year in the US, it’s tricky to get a sense of an individual woman’s chance of conceiving with the procedure. Graphs from the CDC show exactly how often IVF resulted in a baby for women who went through the costly treatment using their own eggs, not donor eggs. A single IVF cycle costs an average of $12,400, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), and women often need multiple tries to get pregnant.

About 36% of IVF cycles result in pregnancy, and 29.4% of cycles result in a baby…

A live birth rate of about 30% for IVF cycles is really pretty respectable. A healthy, fertile 30-year-old woman has about a 20% chance of getting pregnant without assistance every month that she tries, according to the ASRM. That decreases to 5% chance each month for women aged 40.

For couples who try to conceive through IVF, a lot more is at stake financially, emotionally, and physically, even if the success rate is often better than the traditional method.

While looking at the national averages for IVF success rates is a good start for dispelling misconceptions, pregnancy and live birth rates differ from clinic to clinic, and the data don’t tell the whole story. There are many different causes of infertility, and IVF does not address the direct problem for every cause. Only a doctor can say what chance IVF has of success for a particular couple.

Conceptual Options Surrogacy News: Surrogacy & Religion

Conceptual Options Surrogacy News: Surrogacy & Religion

Surrogacy is a hot topic by itself, but when you add religion to the mix it’s like a blazing inferno. This is because many religions are against Surrogacy. For example, in the Catholic religion, it is generally not permitted because it is considered to be against God’s will. While in other religions, such as the Jewish religion, it is generally not considered to be against God’s will and is not shameful to talk about.

Everyone has their own religious views, and they are absolutely entitled to them. And when it comes to the topic of Surrogacy, everyone is also entitled to his or her feelings and views on it. Yet, religious beliefs and other people’s views on the subject of Surrogacy should never be the reason that a person or a family does not fulfill their dream to have a family, especially because those people are not the ones who have to live their lives feeling incomplete or as if their family is missing a piece. Additionally, those people do not consult you when they decide to have a child, and you do not scoff when they tell you that they are going to be adding to their family, so why should they be able to judge you for using a different method to have a child?

Besides, most religions are about forgiveness and family and not judging others, so don’t you think that God or Allah or another higher power would forgive a person or a family who decided to use Surrogacy to complete their family and make them whole by using Surrogacy to have a child. After all, generally speaking children in all religions are considered to be the greatest gift and ought to be cherished.  These children are the next generation who will carry on your teachings and beliefs.  Without children to carry on the beliefs of a religion, that religion would eventually die out because there would be no one to carry on its teachings.

Thus, when it comes to having a child through Surrogacy, do speak to your Rabbi, Priest, Pastor, etc. to understand what your religion feels about Surrogacy. But when it comes down to it, you are the one that has to choose whether or not to have a child using Surrogacy and that will be a decision that you personally will have to deal with for the rest of your life. Your Pastor, Priest, or Rabbi is not the one that will have to deal with that decision, you will. And remember, generally religions preach forgiveness, and if having a child through Surrogacy is what makes you or your family whole you have to believe that you with find forgiveness from your higher power.
